Fryer fire at Mr Chips factory in south Auckland

Emergency services responded to reports of a fire at a potato chip factory in south Auckland on Wednesday evening.

A business owner across the road confirmed it was the Mr Chips factory on Kerwyn Road in East Tāmaki.

He said that it was a small fire coming out of a grease pit, about the size of a wheelie bin or a small car.

Fire crews made short work of putting out the fire, he said.

The businessman said that it smelt like something could have been cooking.

"It was chips mate, so it didn't smell like smoke. But, it often smells like potato around the factory anyway."

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency said seven crews went to a commercial premises in East Tāmaki.

They said crews were alerted to the incident at 4.43pm.
